Edible seaweed (Codium reediae), called aʻala on Kauaʻi. It is more familiar on all islands as limu wāwaeʻiole (Codiumedule), a creeping species covering coral rocks with branched, spongy, felt-like mats. As ʻalaʻula it is known for its fragrance.
