This cane has a very dark-brown pith. The top is very heavy and the leaves somewhat larger than ʻaki lolo. Stalks are usually larger and plants more vigorous in appearance, especially in wetter districts where ʻaki lolo does not thrive. Kamakea: Deep red and green when young, changing to purple and yellow on exposure. Insipid when eaten.
