Kāʻilikiʻi

WahiLocation, Hawaiʻi Place Names (2002),

Beach, surf site, Kahuku, Hawaiʻi. Green sand beach with a foreshore of pebbles at the head of a small bay. The surf site is off the beach. The beach and the surf site take their name from Kāʻilikiʻi, a former fishing village and landing. When outrigger canoes were still the primary mode of transportation, Hawaiians traveling from Kona to Kaʻū normally did not paddle or sail past Ka Lae, or South Point, with its powerful winds and dangerous currents. They landed at Kāʻilikiʻi and then walked east. Lit., seize [the] wooden image.
