  • 2. Village, Keōmuku, Lānaʻi. Former fishing village that was briefly transformed into a plantation town in 1899 when Talula and Frederick Hayselden established the Maunalei Sugar Company at Keōmuku. Five hundred Japanese laborers were brought in to work the cane fields, a pier was constructed at Halepalaoa, and a narrow-gauge railroad was laid out between the pier and the village. The plantation folded by March 1901 after the bubonic plague of 1900 dccimated its workforce and the fresh-water sources for its irrigation turned brackish.
