Liliʻuokalani Gardens
Park, Hilo, Hawaiʻi. On the shore of Waiākea Peninsula and named after Queen Liliʻuokalani (1838-1917), the last queen of the Hawaiian monarchy. The Yedo-type gardens were designed by landscape architect Kinsaku Nakane of Kyoto University in Japan and are reportedly the largest of their kind outside Japan. Literally, smarting of the high-born one. At the time of Liliʻuokalani's birth, her foster mother's aunt, Kīnaʻu, was suffering from eye pain; hence the name.
