Reed's

iʻoaproper noun WahiLocation, Hawaiʻi Place Names (2002),

Bay, landing, Hilo, Hawaiʻi. Small natural bay on the eastern side of Waiākea Peninsula that is used as a public mooring site. Named after William H. Reed, a prominent Big Island businessman, who died in 1880. Reed's Landing, a former landing on the western side of the peninsula, and Reed's Island in the Wailuku River were also named after him. Reed arrived in the islands during the 1840s and specialized in the construction of landings, wharves, bridges, and roads. His other business interests included ranching, coastal trading, and commercial retailing. In 1868 he married Jane Stobie Shipman, the widow of Reverend William C. Shipman, and became the stepfather of her three children, William H. Shipman (1854-1943), Oliver Taylor Shipman (1857-1942), and Margaret Clarissa Shipman (1859-1891).
