Sand Island
Flat island (641.27 acres, less than 10 feet in elevation) in Honolulu Harbor; the island was built up on Ka-hola-loa Reef, partly by dredging the harbor; originally it was the larger of two islands that were joined in 1940. The smaller island had a quarantine station in 1869 and was known as Quarantine Island or Mauli-ola (a god of health). The old name had been Ka-moku-'ākulikuli (the ʻākulikuli plant island) or (rarely) Kaha-ka-ʻau-lana.
