Literally, pathway [of] the god. There were many heiau on the road from Kealakekua to Kailua; Thrum listed 40 (Restarick). It was believed that a god slid down a cliff here leaving an imprint, and that the gods often slid here in order to cross the bay quickly (Wilkes 90, 184).
