kuʻia
1. Pas/imp. of kuʻi #1; to meet an obstacle, stumble; to waver or be unsettled mentally; hit, hindered; attack, sudden blow (loaʻa-type word; Gram. 4.4).
- Figuratively, disturbed or hurt mentally.
- Examples:
- He aha kō mea hele ʻole e kōkua iā lākou? ʻAʻole, ua kuʻia au iā lākou! Why don't you go and help them? No, they've hurt my feelings.
- Ua kuʻia kona manaʻo no ka hilahila i kāna uku ʻole (FS 103), his feelings are wounded from shame at having no pay.
- Ke ʻole e kuʻia, if there's no stumbling [i.e., if nothing prevents].
- Loaʻa kekahi kuʻia iāia, he received a shock.
