The island was discovered by Captain Stanikowitch on March 12, 1828; he named it Moller Island after his ship. Guano was collected here commercially from 1892 to 1904. A bird population close to 10 million was reported in 1902. It was annexed to Hawaiʻi in 1898 and is now a part of the City and County of Honolulu. (Bryan, 1942:183–189.)
