vt., To douse, duck; to upset, tumble, capsize, as in the surf.
- Figuratively, to destroy, overwhelm, as with trouble (luma + -a ʻi or -ʻi, transitivizers: Gram. 6.6.4).
- Examples:
- Lumaʻi ʻia ke kauā, the kauā (outcast) was drowned.
- Ua lumaʻi ʻia kona manaʻolana e nā pilikia, his hopes were dashed by his troubles.
- Lumaʻi ʻia e ka nalu, rolled by the waves.
