maiʻa lele
n., A common wild Hawaiian variety of banana of the uplands; trunk tall, yellowish-green; fruit yellow; flesh pink, edible raw or cooked, good for piepiele, eczema. Literally, altar banana.

- The fruit was commonly offered to gods, the tree planted to shelter the altar. It was planted far from a dwelling house, for fear it would cause the occupants to lele (fly) elsewhere.
