pāoʻo
n. Name for several varieties of ʻoʻopu, especially Istiblennius zebra, Entomacrodus marmoratus (marbled blenny); also called rockskippers because of their ability to leap across stretches of rocky shoreline. The name may be qualified by the terms kauila (Exallias brevis, shortbodied blenny), luahine, puhi. Pāoʻo figure prominently in legends and for some are ʻaumākua. See ex., haʻapupū. Also pānoʻo.
