paʻa.kai

1. Salt; encrusted discharge in the inner corners of the eyes, as after sleeping. Types of salt are paʻakai lele wai, very fine, dried salt; paʻakai walewale, slimy salt; paʻakai puʻupuʻu, coarse salt; paʻakai lepo, salt mixed with earth; paʻakai ʻulaʻula, salt mixed with ocherous earth. 2. A variety of taro, usually grown in the uplands, the plant short and stocky; petioles dark-green, edged with red; corm flesh white, used chiefly for poi.
